Why Did I Buy A Flip Phone

Hi ! It's been a while !
A few days ago, I was talking with a good friend of mine (maybe he's reading this, if it's the case hello to you !) and we talked about my last purchase : a 30$ flip phone. As I'll certainly have to answer a bunch of questions from my familly and friends, here is a lil article to explain it all once :D.

If you only want to get the main ideas, here are the titles :

My time and attention span are precious

I think the title of this one is pretty self-explanatory. My phone is a big source of uncontroled distraction (Social Media Is The Devil). I don't want to be forcibly exposed to the content that those plateforms would provide me. I want to be mindful and conscious about what I'm watching or reading. And the best way to not be exposed is to don't be notified. To be mindful allows me to keep my time and attention for things that are precious for me, for example...

My family and close friends come first

If I keep a smartphone, I put the notifications from text from my family at the same level of importance as email notifications for example. That's not the case. I want my family and friends to come first. I don't want to be drown in an ocean of notifications and forget to answer my familly's texts. They are the most precious thing in my life and this is a great way to actively express it.

Reduce Notification Anxiety

Ocean of notifications always made me anxious. When I have 10 emails, 5 messages and 15 other notifications, I feel bad. I don't want to feel bad. So hopefuly this phone will help me don't. In this phone, the notifications are shown once. When you open the phone, it displays "you received a text" and never brings it back to you EVER again. So you have to process it now, or you risk to forget it. It's actually a really great system to stop procrastinating !

Social Media Is The Devil

As you may have guessed thanks to my article about my YouTube usage, I'm really doubtful about social media. And it's even more true for other media (other than YouTube). The Facebook files were the last step for me to completly and irreversibly get out of every thing Meta-related, and I think I don't have to explain myself about Twitter. To be sure to never be exposed to this plateform ever again, I cut out the medium that is the biggest target of these companies : smartphones.

How is it possible to contact me ?

I'll not have access to Signal or E-mail on my phone anymore. So how will I be aware if people want to contact me on these plateforms ? Really simple. I just programmed an alarm at 06:00 PM to check every one of these plateforms. Another side effect is that it will help me keep my mail inbox clean.

What about my old smartphone ?

I'll of course not trash my old smartphone. If you know me IRL, you know that my old smartphone was already an "old" one. By that I mean that I already had, on purpose, an old and not powerful device (for the same reasons I bought my new flip phone). I'll try to use this phone as rarely as I can, but I might sometime need it for specific purpose. But as it'll not have a SIM card anymore, it'll be mostly useless outside. But when I'm at home, it'll help me tracking my habits for example.

Conclusion

I hope you're now understanding my choice ! If you have a question that I haven't answered already, feel free to contact me :) I'll happily answer you and, if I think the question is relevant enough, update this article by adding your question !
